Lankan Fishermen allegedly assaulted by Indian Coastal guards

A group of fishermen yesterday claimed that they were assaulted by Indian Coastal guards while returning back to Sri Lanka.

The fishermen in three vessels had taken off from the fisheries harbour in Vellamankarae, Wennappuwa.

They claimed that the Indian coast guards were in uniform when they inspected their vessels and thereafter assaulted them.

Two of the injured from one of the vessels have been hospitalized at Karapitiya while two others from the other vessels were being brought back ashore.

One of the vessels had been attacked in the Arabian seas while the fishermen in the other two vessels were allegedly attacked in the Sri Lankan territorial waters.

Director General of the Fishereis Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Susantha Kahawatta that the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Sri Lanka Navy will be requested to investigate the incident.
